MSI GT627

Micro-Star International made its first big push into the U.S. market with its Wind U100 netbook. Now it's targeting the entry-level gaming laptop market with the GT627. But while the hardware specs look good on paper and provide a good deal of power, a couple of design and build issues severely limit the system's appeal.

Priced to move at $1150, the GT627 is housed in an understated black aluminum case. A bit of red trim around the edges adds color, but a chrome grille above the keyboard is the only overt sign that this is a gaming laptop. In fact, the GT627 could easily pass for a stylish business notebook.

Inside is a run-of-mill Intel Core2 Duo 2.26-GHz P8400 CPU that you can overclock on the fly using the laptop's Turbo mode, along with 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and nVidia GeForce 9800M GS graphics with a whopping 1GB of onboard RAM.

In our WorldBench 6 tests, the GT627 earned a solid score of 101. Though we couldn't run our tests at 1680 by 1050 resolution, the laptop managed a frame rate of 62 frames per second in Enemy Territory Quake Wars and 58 fps in Unreal Tournament III at 1024 by 768 resolution in Turbo mode.

Unfortunately, this all-purpose-size laptop exhibited a desktop-replacement-caliber battery life: 2 hours, 29 minutes on a single charge. On average, all-purpose portables have about hour more battery life than the GT627.

For context, let's match MSI's rig against one of Gateway's strong, stylish, reasonably priced gaming laptops. The Gateway P-7811FX delivers a WorldBench 6 score of 96 with very similar specs. But whereas the P-7811FX has a native resolution of 1920 by 1200, our MSI test system fell far short of those numbers, at 1280 by 800.

Lenovo Ideapad Y650

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 is a laptop looking for a niche. At first glance it has all the features of a fairly sexy desktop replacement: The 16-inch LCD screen, JBL speakers, and huge hard drive practically scream "media center notebook." On top of all that, the fairly powerful processor and fast DDR3 memory can deal with just about any video content while handling other tasks, without a hitch. However, considering its low native display resolution and the fact that it has no graphics muscle to speak of, not to mention its price tag of $1299 (on our test unit, as of 4/13/09), we're left to wonder about what, exactly, Lenovo was thinking.

The Y650 has some reasonably powerful components: With a 2.4GHz P8600 Core 2 Duo, 3GB of 1066MHz DDR3 RAM, and a 320GB hard drive, the Y650, running the 32-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium, did really well in WorldBench 6. Notching a score of 98 in our tests, it ripped through tasks at a decent pace--well above the average, in fact. Unfortunately things fell apart in our graphics tests, as the integrated Intel X4500 graphics limped along in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Unreal Tournament III (producing slide-show-worthy scores of 5 and 8 frames per second, respectively).

The Y650 continues Lenovo's recent design direction, sporting a carbon-fiber body with a soft, rubberized shell on the lid. I really liked the soft surface and matte finish; it's a distinctive look that also makes the scratches that are inevitable with glossy finishes a nonissue. The black outer shell of the laptop gives way to a glossy white finish surrounding the keyboard, plus a "copper" trim (which is also reflected in the function keys). It's a clean, distinctive, yet stylish look that makes the machine stand out. If anything, the design suggests that Lenovo intends the Y650 to be a consumer-oriented machine--which makes our review unit's lack of a good GPU an even more glaring omission.

Gateway MC7803U

I'll say one thing about Gateway's MC7803u: It sure doesn't look like it costs only a thousand bucks. Honestly, I'm a little surprised by how the company managed to craft a slick-looking all-purpose laptop and still keep it on a tight budget. Of course, you don't need to be a Mensa candidate to realize that corners must be cut. But after seeing the results, I'm wondering whether the right corners got the axe.pending $1000 won't net you the fastest machine on the block, but the MC7803u does all right for itself. It runs on an Intel 2-GHz Core 2 Duo T5800 CPU, 4GB RAM, and a 512MB AMD Radeon HD 3650 GPU. All of those components make sense if you're Gateway, looking to come in on budget. In reality, however, you end up creating a machine that barely ekes out a score of 78 in WorldBench 6. Though hovering around the average is fine, that kind of performance is hardly capable of delivering a decent game experience. In fact, in our tests Gateway's machine could muster only 79 frames per second in Doom 3 and 94 in FarCry at 1024 by 768 resolution. In comparison, another machine that promises multimedia speed is HP's HDX16. Granted, that model is almost twice the price as configured for our review ($1973), but its high-powered hardware delivered 90 frames per second in Doom 3--at 1280 by 1024 resolution.

Gateway wins back a couple points in battery life, as in our tests the MC7803u managed to survive 3 hours, 48 minutes on a charge of the included battery. This system may not last as long as Lenovo's ThinkPad SL400 (which chugged along for 5 hours, 8 minutes with its massive nine-cell battery), but it hovers right in the range of what we expect of all-purpose laptops. And for portables that require juice for 16-inch screens, its results aren't so shabby.

Something is amiss with this laptop's glass display, though: The 16-inch screen is a little washed out. From the middle to the upper end of the brightness settings, its colors get blasted. A little fine-tuning at the lower settings, and the screen was serviceable long enough for me to write this review on the machine. Perhaps the native 1366 by 768 resolution is a little weak for such a large display.

Gateway UC7807U

Gateway's UC7807u costs only $800? I'm not saying that this borderline ultraportable has the speediest parts--or that it's a featherweight (it's far from either). But the slick styling of this beaut certainly tricks you into thinking it is worth more.t's almost as though an engineer at Gateway took a bunch of notes on what works and what doesn't from different manufacturers to put this thing together. If you look carefully, you can see a bit of HP here (the keyboard), Sony there (the hinge), and inspiration from Panasonic (the mousepad), as well.

Don't let that fool you, though. The UC7807u is a value machine through and through. Running the show: An Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 Mobile CPU (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache) and 3GB of RAM will see you through most basic work tasks. Just don't expect to find any high-end gaming performance--the UC7807u cuts a sizable corner by rolling only with Intel's gimpy integrated GPU. Despite that, the results are better than average. Notching an 84 in PC WorldBench 6, it'll hammer through any basic business chore you can throw at it. And lasting a fairly reasonable 3 hours, 36 minutes in our battery tests, it can keep chugging along for a respectible period of time.

But it wasn't the horsepower that caught my attention at first. Rather, it was the large, flat keys. Akin to what you'll find on HP's Mini 1000 line, the UC7807u's keyboard makes touch-typing a breeze. Built solidly, it won't bow noticeably, and the multimedia touch control panel sitting above complements the controls nicely. In short, I love it. What would've been nicer: programmable shortcut keys. One odd touch, a circular touchpad, takes a little bit of practice. However, the mouse pad works nicely. Instead of two mouse buttons, you have a single bar along the bottom--pressing one end or the other registers the click you want. That doesn't mean this mouse bar couldn't be a little larger--or more clearly divide the line between a left- and right-mouse click. Sometimes, I hit too close to the center and nothing registered as a click. Not a huge deal, just something worth pointing out.

Micro Express JHL9050

Micro Express has done it again. Following speed demons such as the JFL9226 and the IFL9025, the JHL9050 provides power and performance in spades. If only the company could iron out the lingering design faux pas, there'd be little to stop this unassuming $1199 all-purpose laptop from climbing to the top of the budget-notebook hill.

The JHL9050 comes equipped with Windows Vista Business; it's built for productivity, too, with 3GB of RAM and Intel's Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz T9550 processor. Impressive hardware begets impressive WorldBench 6 scores: It earned a mark of 110 during our litany of tests. In battery-life tests, it lasted 3 hours, 23 minutes--about the average for all-purpose laptops we've played with in the labs.

Powered by a 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650, this portable will help you achieve some of your gaming aspirations. Unreal Tournament 3, for instance, posted a respectable 65 frames per second when running at a resolution of 1024 by 768 in our tests. Compare that with the marks of the MSI GT627, another 15-inch, game-ready laptop. That $1150 portable scored within the same range (it nailed 62 fps in Unreal Tournament 3 and snagged a respectable 101 in WorldBench 6).

Micro Express's laptop pulls ahead of the MSI, however, thanks to a slightly higher screen resolution. The JHL9050's 15-inch screen runs at a movie-buff-friendly 1366 by 768 resolution. (MSI, did you really think a gaming rig with a 1280-by-800-pixel resolution was a good idea?) The screen of the JHL9050 remains bright and crisp whether you're in a low-light environment or in a typical fluorescent-lit office; it's even usable outdoors, though direct sunlight can produce a bit of glare.

Acer Travelmate 6293-6889

Not all slim and light laptops come off the conveyor belt bursting with sex appeal. Take the Acer TravelMate 6293: Battery life, it has in spades. Everything else? Not so much. This entirely black portable is fairly well packaged as far as all-purpose laptops go, but if this machine were to go on a diet and lose 0.6 pounds, it could qualify as a good deal for an ultraportable. No doubt Acer's goal was to cut corners--and some standard notebook connections--to a hit a palatable $999 price point, perfectly acceptable for a business budget. But the result is a laptop that's a tad frumpy.

Don't get me wrong--performance-wise, the TravelMate 6293 rocks. Its battery life is Energizer Bunny amazing. Equipped with a powerful 7200-mAh battery, the laptop lasted 3 minutes shy of 8 hours in our tests. Just stick this baby in a backpack or briefcase and walk out the door declaring Outlet Freedom Day. The results are far better than what we've seen from any other all-purpose portable on the scene. Heck, because of its diminutive size, we were this close to comparing it with a Lenovo ThinkPad X200.

The speed of the TravelMate 6293 is good, too, though not quite as breathtaking. The 2.26-GHz Core 2 Duo P8400-equipped unit with 2GB of RAM turned in a pretty impressive WorldBench 6 score of 90, so it should be able to handle any type of work swiftly, limited only by the shared video memory. Lack of a dedicated graphics card is an unfortunate characteristic of small laptops that effectively eliminates gaming; the memory is just too sparse to support 3D shooters with fancy shading.

Of course, small screens don't lend themselves to entertainment, either, but the 12.1-inch, 1280-by-800-pixel, wide-aspect display is fine for any other job you care to squeeze into those small quarters. It's crisp, reasonably bright, and glossy, but it won't hurt your eyes under office lights.
